Each of us knows what does anxiety mean. This is a hazy and unpleasant emotional state of mind when a person expects the adverse sequence of events, suffers from the presence of apprehension, fear and stress. Unlike ordinaty fear, anxiety is usually pointless, whereas the fear implies the object, person, event or situation which provokes it.

The anxiety  is a human propensity for an anxiety experience. Typically, the anxiety is associated with expectations of the social consequences of success or failure as well as with the stress. On the one hand, the anxiety is the signs of a stress and on the other hand, it determines the individual sensitivity to a stress.

In many situations, the feeling of anxiety is natural, adequate and even useful. For example, the anxiety can appear during a public speaking to an audience or at examination. People feel anxious walking alone at night on the unlit street or getting lost in the wood. Such anxiety is beneficial, since it encourages to prepare better for a presentation, learn the material before the exam and think about whether you need to go out at night alone.

But for some people the anxiety becomes chronic and constant disorder and appears not only in stressful situations, but with no apparent reason. Then the anxiety begins to disturb the individual and hinders him from living his daily life, and a simple anxiety becomes an anxiety disorder.

So, what is what is anxiety disorder? If the feelings of anxiety become strong and frequent, it can be expected the presence of one of the types of anxiety disorders:

  • generalized anxiety disorder, which makes a person feel an inexplicable stress and discomfort;
  • various phobias, in a form of destructive irrational fear of a specific object, actions or or situation;
  • the obsessive-compulsive disorder in which a person is concerned of obsessive thoughts or actions.

An excessive concern, tension and fear experienced by people with anxiety disorders may be accompanied by some physical and psychological complaints.

The main symptoms of anxiety disorders are: rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremor or trembling, respiratory distress, pain and discomfort in the chest, nausea or abdominal distress (such as a burning sensation in the stomach), dizziness, feelings of unreality or the feeling of self-alienation, fever or chills, numbness or pin sensation, muscle tightness or achiness, hyperreaction to a surprise or fear. It is also very difficult to focus for people with anxiety disorders, they suffer from the constant irritability and sleeplessness.

Can anxiety disorders be treated?

Yes they can. Anxiety disorders can be treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication or both.

It is believed that behavioral therapy provides the most effective treatment for anxiety disorders. Its methods involves the recreating of predicaments that trigger obsessions taking the steps to prevent adverse reactions.

Most effective for the anxiety disorders is a combination of behavioral and cognitive therapy. Using the combination of these methods will not only help to change the undesirable behavior, but also can change the thoughts and beliefs that can reinforce the symptoms of anxiety disorders.
